It’s hard to believe that we are in a New Year!  As we step into that year, it’s the perfect time to make resolutions that prioritize the safety and security of your home. They say that almost 60% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by the end of January….let’s do better!  By taking a few proactive steps, you not only enhance the safety of your loved ones but also reduce the risk of potential insurance claims. Here are some Home Protection Resolutions for a safer and more secure living space:

  1. Fortify Home Security:
    • Upgrade your home security system with modern features like smart locks, surveillance cameras, and motion-sensor lighting.
    • Ensure that all entry points, including doors and windows, are sturdy and equipped with reliable locks.
  2. Fire Safety First:
    • Test smoke detectors regularly and replace batteries at least once a year.
    • Create and practice a fire evacuation plan with all members of your household.
    • Keep fire extinguishers in key areas of your home, such as the kitchen and garage – and make sure they are in working order!
  3. Mindful Maintenance:
    • Regularly inspect your roof for any signs of damage or wear. Addressing issues promptly can prevent leaks and water damage.
    • Clean gutters regularly to avoid water buildup, especially during the rainy season.
    • Trim trees and bushes around your property to minimize the risk of falling branches.
  4. Documentation Matters:
    • Create a comprehensive home inventory, including photographs or videos of valuable possessions. Store this documentation in a secure location.  Jeff and I also made sure that our kids know where those documents can be found.
    • Keep important documents, such as insurance policies, in a fireproof and waterproof safe.
  5. Winter Readiness:
    • Ensure your heating system is in good working condition and have it professionally serviced if needed.
    • Protect pipes from freezing by insulating them, especially in colder climates.
  6. Stay Connected:
    • Keep communication devices charged and easily accessible in case of emergencies.
    • Share emergency contacts with neighbors and consider joining or forming a neighborhood watch group.
  7. Review Your Insurance Coverage:
    • Schedule a review of your homeowners insurance policy to ensure it adequately covers your home and possessions.  Has it been a while since you reviewed it?  Call us to schedule an appointment!
    • Discuss potential discounts or adjustments with your insurance agent based on your home improvements and safety measures.
